Libations in Lake Mills

October 1, 9:09 PM Milwaukee Day Trips Examiner Erin Hanley

Only an hour away from Milwaukee, there is a place where the worlds of beer and wine collide - "Legendary" Lake Mills. Some might say the town is legendary due to its rich history, but one visit to the local brewery or wine shop might change their minds. Just remember your designated driver.

Tyranena Brewing Company puts the word "legendary" right on their label. Flavorful brews named after local legends, such as Stone Tepee Pale Ale or Headless Man Amber Alt, are its specialty. The brewery's tasting room is open Wednesday through Saturday nights and most of the day on Sundays. You will find most of Tyranena's beers are showcased, including its unique seasonal and specialty brews. The current seasonal is the Painted Ladies Pumpkin Spice Ale for the fall. Check its website before starting your drive to see if a tour is scheduled, as the availability can vary, and to check out which Saturday night band is entertaining.

If in the mood for something different, take advantage of the extensive wine selection available at The Wine Vineyard. The shop is a combination of store and tasting bar so you can try before you buy. Featured are many of the wineries right here in Wisconsin, such as Von Stiehl, Cedar Creek and Wollersheim. Also available are gourmet chocolates and fine cigars, creating a winning trifecta of sensory experiences.

While beer and wine tasting are an awesome way to spend the day, food should be considered at some point between drinks. Carp's Landing is located across the street from The Wine Vineyard and boasts a southwest twist on American favorites. Reasonably priced, the menu offers a good variety from ribs to pasta to a champagne brunch on Sundays. Check the website for the current event schedule to check out which band is playing this weekend. Also, a little tip - Carp's accommodates take-out orders and according to their websites, both Tyranena and The Wine Vineyard welcome food carry-ins
